Läkerol Licorice Sea Salt 2.64 oz
Läkerol has been made in Gävle, Sweden since 1909, when the pharmacist Adolf Ahlgren set out to soothe sore throats and ended up founding a national habit. This is the sea salt variety: soft liquorice finished with flor de sal, giving a gentle saltiness rather than the fierce ammonium salmiak of true saltlakrits. Sugar-free, and the pastilles dissolve slowly rather than crunching.
How Swedes eat it: a tin lives in a coat pocket from September onwards — Läkerol is reached for at the first scratch of a cold. It is also a standing companion to strong black coffee at fika, where the salt cuts the bitterness. Try one after a rich meal in place of dessert.
